How to look your absolute best on your special day

How to look your absolute best on your special day

As an on location – working makeup artist in the Philadelphia area, I get approached to work on a lot of clients who request my services for their special events. proms, sweet sixteens, photo shoots, and of course weddings.  With these special events, you have to expect that photos will be taken. Photos can be a wonderful document of time, but with that being said, they can also be unforgiving! Professional photos, or even simple cell phone shots can be unforgiving especially if done with a flash.  Regardless of the special event, there are a few things you can do to insure that you look your absolute best at these events, and that you are photographed looking just as gorgeous.

  1. Have the right color of foundation and powder on for your skin tone.  Once applied try taking two selfie photos of yourself with the flash on, or have someone take a shot of you. Be mindful not to take the photo with the camera/cell phone too close. A lot of makeup trends that use HD powders have properties in it that cause flashback, a white cast that appears when a flash photo is taken. Your best bet is to practice, and do some trial and error, so that you don’t experience something like that in your photos, especially on your special day.
  2. Be mindful of the weather. Is it hot outside? Or maybe there is snow. Snow, rain, blazing heat… regardless, be mindful of the type of weather that you will be dealing with and be prepared for a touch up.  Waterproof mascara, and Blot powder are some classic must-haves.  If it is hot outside, and you are traveling to the event in full glam – choose a seat in your vehicle and direct one of the air conditioning vents towards your face and have it turned on at medium force – to prevent sweating due to the heat and to keep your face and upper body cool. Also, be sure to put your hair over your shoulder , not on your back, so that you do not press it while seated in the car.
  3. Hair! Nothing can ruin a photo than hair. Make sure it is neat, and behaving well. My recommendation? Get it professionally done! Same goes for makeup. When choosing the right artists for the job, professionals will offer a trial session prior to the day of the event, so you are able to see first hand what it will look like and how it performs under the test of time.
